Word count, character counts, line count and an approximate reading time.
How to count words, characters and reading time
Paste your text to compare word count, all characters and characters without whitespace. These counts serve different writing and publishing limits.
- Paste or type text and select Count text. After the first count, the figures also update as you continue typing.
- Words are sequences of letters or digits; an internal apostrophe or hyphen keeps the expression together. For example, e-mail counts as one word.
- Characters include spaces and punctuation. Without spaces excludes whitespace, including tabs and line breaks; Lines counts newline-separated lines.
Reading time is an estimate based on 200 words per minute. Characters are counted as Unicode code points, so combined emoji and individual platform limits may count differently.
Does the character count include spaces?
Yes. Characters includes spaces and punctuation; Without spaces removes all whitespace, including tabs and newlines.
How are hyphenated words and emoji counted?
An expression such as e-mail counts as one word. Emoji do not count as words, while a combined emoji may contain multiple Unicode code points.
Is my text sent to a server?
No. The counting logic runs locally in your browser; the text is not sent to Ormaven to perform the calculation.
